Drive is a hardwearing solvent based clear sealer designed to enhance and protect concrete, including stamped, patterned and stencilled driveways, exposed aggregate, coloured concrete, clay brick and concrete pavers and tiles, and *slate.

Drive dries to a high gloss ‘wet look’ clear finish and provides a smooth washable surface, protecting from stains, spills and reducing the ability of moulds, algae and lichen to discolour the surface.

Drive is a UV stable solution acrylic with excellent optical clarity and is designed to provide many years of service.

Drive is well suited to protecting new surfaces or restoring aged and faded concrete, stencilled, patterned and stamped concrete.

Trials have shown Drive has excellent resistance to hot tire marking, oils, fuels and other stains and, as such, will make an exceptional sealer for concrete garage floors. Drive is non-yellowing and enhances colour and substrate appearance.

  • All surfaces should be clean, sound and free from dry or loose material. Check for presence of waxes, mould release or bond breaking agents, oils or other contaminants than may affect adhesion before application.

  • Moulds, lichen or fungal growth should be treated with a suitable algicide or if unavailable with a dilute bleach solution (1 part household bleach to 2 parts water) to kill any spores. Leave the bleach solution in contact with the surface for approx 10 minutes then liberally rinse with clean water and allow to dry.

  • Do not apply if rain is expected within 24 hours of application. Keep newly sealed concrete protected from rain for at least 12 hours.

  • Do not apply if surface temperature is above 30°C as this may cause blisters and bubbles in the coating.

Drive is a solvent based sealer and is not compatible with water. The presence of water in the substrate may result in a cloudy finish as moisture is trapped under the coating during curing. Even if the concrete looks dry, there may still be significant moisture within the concrete. High humidity may also cause moisture problems. A moisture test is strongly advised.

A simple moisture test is to tape a small square of cling film or plastic to the concrete and leave fo an hour or so. If there is no condensation or moisture the surface is generally safe to seal. Note that in colder temperatures, moisture may not be evident.
  - test areas should ideally be in direct sunlight and left longer in cooler conditions.

New Concrete

Concrete should be allowed to cure fully (at least 14 days) before application of Drive. Any crumbling, loose or protruding sections of concrete should be removed by grinding and/or acid etching. Prepare a dilute solution of hydrochloric acid (1 part acid to 20 parts water) and broom over surface. Ensure surface stays wet for approx. 10 minutes and then pressure clean at approx. 3000psi using a liberal amount of water. Allow to dry.

Renovating previously sealed surfaces can be difficult unless you know what sealer was originally applied over the concrete. Drive is compatible with a wide range of solvent based clear sealers which are typically used on concrete driveways and paths. Drive is not suitable for application over surfaces previously sealed with water based sealers or paving paints, urethanes, epoxies or silicone style water repellents. We strongly recommend a test area is undertaken before large scale application – especially if you are unsure of the type of sealer used previously.

Surfaces should be cleaned with a general purpose cleaner to remove any oils, fats or waxes. Pressure wash and allow to dry.

For the first coat we recommend the addition of up to 20% solvent when resealing older concrete to aid adhesion. Do not dilute the second or subsequent coats – apply neat.

 • Apply in well ventilated areas only.

 • Drive is highly flammable - take all precautions to ensure no ignition source is present when applying.

 • The use of glasses and gloves is recommended to protect the eyes and skin during application.

Application with a solvent resistant roller or broom is ideal. For the first coat we recommend the addition of up to 10% solvent especially with smooth or dense surfaces. Add up to 20% solvent for application over hard stone or slate or older sealed concrete. Wait a minimum of 2 hours before applying second coat.

Do not dilute the second or subsequent coats – apply neat. The pail is designed to allow a 230mm broom or roller to be dipped directly into the pail without need for a roller tray. Use steady long roller strokes and avoid overworking the sealer or pushing your roller too quickly as this may trap air bubbles in the coating. Keep the pail sealed when not in use. Do not pour over the surface and attempt to flood the area or allow to pool.

Foot traffic should be avoided for 12 hours and vehicular traffic for at least 24 – 48 hours after application of the final coat to allow curing of the coating

Optional addition:

Addition of an anti slip additive is strongly recommended in the final coat when used in wet areas, on smooth surfaces or on steep driveways or paths. Anti slip should be added to the final coat only. Application of an additional thin coat with antislip is suggested if any areas are of concern following application of Drive.

Drive cures and hardens as the solvent evaporates from the coating. In hot temperatures rapid drying can be problematic and we recommend application early in the day to avoid hot surfaces.
Additional solvent can be added to assist application over hot surfaces or in hot conditions.

Spray equipment may be used for larger projects but electric or petrol motor driven spray equipmernt should be avoided unless designed for use with flammable liquids due to the risk of fire.
Hand held sprayers are prone to breakdown as rubber and plastic parts soften as they come into contact with the solvent.

Re-sealing every 18 - 24 months is recommended to keep your concrete looking great.
Stamped, stencilled or coloured concrete requires regular sealer application to reduce wear patterns in high traffic areas.

Acrylic sealers will wear over time, and product life is dependant on a wide range of factors such as the amount of traffic, temperatures, rainfall, age of concrete, etc.

Gloss levels are affected by cleaners and other environmental factors and a loss of gloss is to be expected over time, although the sealer will continue to protect your concrete.

If your concrete has been well maintained you will maximise the lifetime and look of your job. Remove stains and spills as soon as possible to maximise the life of your sealer.

Avoid washing   cars or using waxes or detergents on your sealer as these may lead to build up and make re-sealing more difficult.

Drive is designed as a clear sealer however it may be tinted with solvent based tinters.  To achieve opacity approximately 10% tinters should be added eg add 1.5ltrs of tint to each 15ltr pail. As tinters will contain solvents these dilute the coating and the resulting film build will be thinner. Additional coats may be required to achieve an opaque and uniform finish.  We strongly suggest testing before large scale application to confirm the finish required.

Regular stirring during application is required and we recommend the application of one clear (untinted) coat over the top of any tinted sealer to help protect the pigments.

Troubleshooting - Repair

Two potential application problems are water whitening and air bubbles trapped in the coating on hot surfaces. If Drive is applied over a damp surface or is rained on before curing it may become cloudy. To remove the water a solvent ‘wash’ is required. This involves brooming solvent over the surface and working into the coating. This process softens the coating, releases the water and allows the coating to dry clear again. Bubbles in the coating can also be repaired by application of a solvent wash. Xylene is the preferred solvent where available.

Damage to the coating eg scratches can be repaired by rubbing the affected area with a solvent based rag and then re-applying Drive to the affected area. Some chemicals such as Methylated Spirit will turn the coating white and this must be repaired by removing the affected area with solvent and re-applying.
